Hello all! My name is Lionel, or as my internship supervisor Dan Thio will call me, Chonky. I was an operations intern at the Humanist Society from September to October 2020.
My duties as an operations intern mostly included proposing, planning, and executing Humanist Society events. During my internship, I organized the weekly Mindfulness Meditation sessions, a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at the Thong Teck Home for Senior Citizens, and helped with monthly Peer Support Group sessions.
Most of the proposing, planning, and executing of events is fine, to be honest. Really, you create a form on Google Forms, routinely check who signs up for your events, invite speakers, get partners, then finally, add participants into a group chat for more announcements, and voilà!
It’s the other parts behind the scenes, such as designing posters and creating a write-ups for the programmes, that is hard for me. For one poster, I had to make as many as 13 different edits and 13 distinct and separate iterations of the same poster (so if you don’t like the posters you see on the Humanist Society website, you are making me cry T.T)
(Admin’s note: Lionel’s posters are great! Check them out below)
I also helped to craft a data management proposal and helped to close gaps in the Society’s existing data collection and management system.
To improve outreach to members, I helped to create new Telegram chat group for everyone who is keen to learn more about the Humanist Society, and another new Telegram channel to publicise our events!
It was really nice to be under the guidance of the Executive Committee, people like Dan Thio (thanks for teaching me CivCRM, WordPress, and Mailpoet), Jianyue (thanks for personally guiding me through our society’s merhandising system and the history of the society), and Chee Hoew (thanks for teaching me some graphic designs tips).
I hope I have helped the Society during my brief stint as an operations intern, and I look forward to organising more activities as a member and as a volunteer moving forward.
Lastly, please join my new Humanist Meditation Club!
