Humanist Cafe: Growing up in a non-religious family

Date
20/04/2024

Time
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Humanist Cafe is a monthly gathering aimed at providing peer support for the non-religious at multiple stages of life. Guided by facilitators, participants can share their life experience along one of the five themes marking life’s milestones. At the Cafe, you are able to give and draw support from fellow participants in the process.

This month’s theme: Growing up as a freethinker

[Slots are limited. Please register here. Venue to be confirmed upon registration.]

If you come from a deeply religious family, growing up as a freethinker can be lonely experience. Your family might not fully accept your decision to leave the faith. You could experience strong pressure to join religious activities, such as religious classes and ceremonies. You also wondered if there are others who are in a similar situation.

If you come from non-religious family, there could other type of challenges. How do you respond when religious evangelists question where your morals come from? What was your supporting community when you run into difficulties? While religious people can turn to religious leaders and holy texts for guidance, where did you turn to for answers to life’s big questions?

If you are a non-religious parent, how did you introduce morality and ethics to your children? How did you explain when children ask uncomfortable questions (eg. death, the supernatural, origin of things)? How did you explain the importance of secularism and religious harmony in Singapore?

At this Cafe, we will share some resources available for non-religious parents, gathered from Humanist International and Humanists UK.
