Confucianism is considered the philosophical backbone of East Asia. Economists and sociologists have attributed the meteoric rise and mind-blowing prosperity of the Asian Tiger economies to the ‘Confucian work ethic.’
But what are the flipsides of this still-dominant ancient philosophy? Western liberal critics of Confucianism have labelled it a ‘fundamentalist ideology’, claiming that the cultural longevity of ancient Chinese civilization was built on the oppression of women, the violent indoctrination of children and the brutal exploitation of the working class; not unlike the oppressive nature of monotheistic theocracies.
