[Members only] Opportunity and invitation on UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

Dear Humanist Society Members,

We have received an invitation from Humanists International (HI) that may allow our Society to address the United Nations on Singapore’s human rights record.

Singapore’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report will be adopted at the UN on or around 24 September 2026. NGOs will have the chance to deliver short statements responding to the State’s human rights commitments. Humanists International is bidding for a two-minute speaking slot and has invited Humanist Society Singapore to deliver a joint video statement with them.

What this involves

  • A two-minute video statement delivered jointly with Humanists International.
  • HI will help edit the text to fit the usual UN style.

Current status & timeline

HI will bid for the slot next week and expects to hear back the week after. Registration will be required at that point. For now, they are simply seeking an expression of interest.

If we proceed:

  • Draft statement needed by 16 September 2026
  • Filming completed by 20 September 2026
  • If anyone has security concerns about appearing on camera, a member of HI staff is willing to deliver the statement on our behalf.

Next steps

If you would like to be involved in drafting or delivering the statement (or simply want to know more), please email us at info@humanist.org.sg as soon as possible so we can coordinate a response to HI.

This is a rare chance for a Singaporean humanist voice to be heard at the United Nations. Please let us know of your interest or any questions.
