Synopsis:
Religious freedom covers the right to believe or not, and the outward expression of those beliefs through activities like worship, teaching, and rituals. It varies across legal systems, cultures and history, posing challenges at the intersections of societal interests and human rights. This lecture, employing a decolonial approach, critically examines the term “religion”, highlighting its constructed and historically contingent nature in the context of power dynamics. Departing from age-old debates on “freedom”, I will use contextual examples to explore issues of religious minorities, spiritual practices, belonging, justice, and rights.
