Carvaka/ Lokayata philosophy developed at a time when religious dogma such as reality, afterlife, the existence of god, and the superiority of the Vedas was being increasingly questioned in India. It is one of the oldest heterodox systems in India and one of the six darshans in ancient Hindu Philosophy. It greatly differs from the other philosophies in its increasing tendencies towards Atheism and materialism.
